This is my Elite: Dangerous themed build. I scraped together the money and components over many months last year but I'm quite pleased with how it turned out! I'll walk you trough the rationale of my specs:
CPU and motherboard When I first planned out this build, Skylake was just around the corner. When Kaby Lake came out, the 7700k was just about the same price as the 6700k I originally planned to put in it. With the CPU change I naturally switched out my motherboard for a Z270 chipset variant.
RAM I originally planned to go with 4×8GB kit of G.Skill's "regular" Trident Z memory. When the RGB version came out I just couldn't resist!
Storage After the HDD in my old build died on me (and practically disintegrated) I decided to go full on solid state in this build. The 840 series drive is the boot drive from my old system.
Cooling I settled on white LED magnetic bearing fans to offset the colours from the RGB components and illuminate the inside of the build a bit more. I've got the case fans set to a fairly low RPM (arond 30-35% fan speed) so they are virtually silent. The Kraken X62 on the CPU uses the included fans (which are fairly quiet as well) in a "pull" configuration. I recently sitched them out for some more ML140 PRO fans in "push" for the little bit of extra silence (not to mention looks!).
Case I've always been a fan of Phanteks cases, especially the Evolv series. My original plan was to use the Evolv ATX with tempered glass side panels but I decided to wait for the mATX version at the last minute. That meant switching over to a mATX motherboard as well but I'm glad I waited. The silk screening on the tempered glass back panel is a very welcome addition with a build as crowded (cable-wise) like this.
Peripherals Since I play a lot of Elite: Dangerous I upgraded my old Thrustmaster HOTAS to the Saitek X52 Pro. The mouse is actually the Logitech G502 Spectrum (which I somehow couldn't find in PartsPicker). I'm very satisfied with the RGB functionality of the K70 keyboard and it's a joy to write/game on. The speakers I actually picked up used for around 70 bucks. Great sounding set IF you don't mind tweaking the equalizer on your pc (I use PCEqualizer). The wireless headset is very much an improvement for me because I hate managing cables when I'm gaming. I can also walk to the kitchen and get coffee without losing signal! And dit I mention it's RGB? The 21:9 aspect ratio of the LG monitor is the replacement for my old EyeFinity/Surround setup. Never going back to bezels! My second monitor is a 27" 1440p model to roughly match the vertical size of the 34" Ultrawide. If only the bezels on the 27" were a little bit slimmer..
Desk and chair After spending years behind a standard IKEA desk on a non-adjustable chair I did my back and neck a favor by upgrading to the DXracer and an adjustable desk. I've bought the desk from an office supplies reseller which meant I could choose the colour of the desktop. I chose mine to both offset the black PC case/peripherals and match the rest of my living room furniture. I bought an RGBW LED strip and attached it to the back of the desk. Pulling the desk slightly back from the wall creates a very pleasing backlight effect. The included remote lets me change colour and intensity so if it's too bright at night I can always turn it down.
