Steampunk telecomputron
Steampunk-style case made from scratch. It took about 5-6 weeks to build.
The case itself is made of 6mm plywood. The plywood was torched with an open flame to get the grain to "pop" a little more. It was then coarse-sanded and stained a dark brown to make it look old and rustic. Chose to not use any clear coat as it would have made it look too shiny and new. The theme was to try and use as much wood, copper, brass and gold as i could, yet still make it look like it would feel right at home in any steampunk/Fallout-genre movie or game.
I made a complete custom water cooling including a 2x120 mm (240) radiator, EKWB CPU and GPU blocks custom painted to look like gold/brass, yet with an "unpolished" look. The same is for the radiator and pump, yet those are painted copper, also "unpolished". I used all hard raw copper tubes with an analog temperature gauge on the front that reads the coolant temperature.
I choose to use clear coolant, to make it have that raw, functional look. It looked very good with the orange LED's in the fans and the vacuum tubes. I also made a few warm-white LED's that lit up the inside of the case for inspection purposes. I do not have pictures of those in use.
You can adjust the speed of the 200mm fan by turning the gold knob in the top center of the front.
Decorative parts are collected from the local scrap yard and various places around.
A little more about the more decorative features:
- The Homelite red cover on the front is a cover from an old chainsaw, repurposed as a fan grill for an 80mm fan behind it. The wires coming out in front, is the power wires for the fan.
- Upper left side of the front features two voltmeters. One is AC voltage and displays the voltage coming from the wall socket into the power supply. The other one shows DC 12V voltage coming from the power supply into the motherboard.
- On the top right of the front is a key. This is used to turn the computer on and off.
- Right side of the top cover features a fully functional numpad with laser cut keycaps in a typewriter-style.
- Center top cover features a big, yellow sign saying "HØYSPENNING LISVFARE", which means "Danger! High voltage!" in Norwegian.
- Left top cover are a glass window featuring 3 vacuum tubes with an orange LED glow.
- The copper cover on the top/back is from an old fireplace.
All parts that are looking white/green-ish color are treated with a mix of hydrogenperoxide, salt and vinegar, which in turn oxidizes the copper, making it the turquoise/green/blue color. I chose not to do that to the copper tubes, as they are carrying coolants, and a failure in the walls of the tubes would be catastrofical.
It is supposed to look a bit rough and dusty, something that is being used on a daily basis, and not a showpiece made for display purposes only.
