Post-build thoughts (AKA: anxiety about water cooling)
I really wish I kept a journal as I was building the computer. I like writing and as the build took about a week of passive, very part-time building, I could've written a couple of posts in that time. I guess that's now in the past.
The computer performs well. I haven't really overclocked and/or tinkered with much. I turned on XMP for the RAM. I turned on PBO for the CPU. Finally, I increased the power limit of the GPU to 114%, which is now at 400W. I still need to figure out how to turn on and use the "Dynamic OC", which is the main selling point of this motherboard. Maybe it's not a great idea to use it with an air cooler, even a great one like the NH-D15.
Before this computer was build, my main computer was a late 2015 MacBook Pro for everything, including school (I'm a full time law student). I want to fully "move over" to this new computer, but still find myself using the laptop way more than I was anticipating. I can't completely get rid of the MacBook Pro as I'll need to use it when in-person school starts back up in the upcoming Fall. Still, I need to start using it for more than just occasional gaming.
I keep flirting with the idea of water cooling the computer. At least once a week, for at least a month or two, I plan out a loop, add all of the parts (if available) to the cart of Performance-Pcs or EKWB, and then hold off when I see the total cost (~$1K +/- 200-300). I know the performance is definitely not worth the cost, but I like the looks, and it would personalize the build further. Aside from the cost, I don't think this case is the greatest "template" for the water cooling. Mainly because I do not have the two upper radiator mounts, which would've allowed space for two more 240mm or 280mm radiators and/or fans, means I am limited to a 280mm rad, a 120mm rad, and a 160mm rad (they actually exist). I can use the 240mm radiator mount which is built into the bottom of the case, but it seems as though few do (the water line routing becomes an absolute nightmare I imagine - it was the main reason I chose to go with an air cooler over a 240mm AIO).
With that, I have eyed two potential cases that I like; Phanteks Evolv X ATX and Cooler Master SL600M. I want to be able to see more of my build, and the potential water loop, and that is just not possible with the form factor of the BH8. If I were to sell the Caselabs BH8, I'd likely be able to recuperate much of the costs of the water loop and the new case. But because I spent so much time hunting for the case, getting it painted and refurbished, I don't really want to get rid of it.
Lastly, as someone who is OCD about dust and cleanliness in general, I absolutely HATE that this case lacks dust filters. I know that Demci-flex filters exist, but I've heard pretty bad things about them. They also look rather awful. I've been considering making my own dust filters but because aluminum is non-magnetic and I refuse to alter the case in any permanent way, I'm not really sure how to proceed.
I guess I'll keep thinking about it for now.
