I purchased the Oculus Rift for playing racing games, the setup was quite simple - use the office PC and the desk as the base for my wheel, setup the Rift and away we go. I loved it! A week after buying the Rift I gave Beat Saber a go and fell in love with the game but, the office isn't really big enough for swinging light sabers. Enter the living room VR PC Build.

I wanted something that wouldn't look out of place in the living room and ended up opting for the Fractal Designs Node 202. I also wanted something that would be of reasonable spec but manage the heat (don't want anything big or noisy in the living room!) so I went for the i5-8400 due to good performance and low TDP. I had some liquid metal and the delidding tool to hand so although it's a low TDP chip I thought I might as well de-lid it. Did it make any difference? I don't know but I like knowing that it's as good as it can be. In Prime95 blend testing it sat at full boost of 3.8 (well, 3.79, but whose counting .01?) across all 6 cores, so I'm pretty happy with that.

Similarly I went for a small GPU, the 1060 6GB mini, the idea being the more space in the case, the more room for airflow.

There was one issue with the quality control of the Node 202, some of the rivets weren't fitted correctly pushing the middle structure of the case over to one side (the motherboard wouldn't even fit!) but rather than send it back it was an easy fix, drill out the badly fitted rivets, align the case properly and rivet it back together.

It worked out well. Temperatures are kept fairly low, noise is kept to a minimum and the case doesn't look out of place in a living room. All in all, I'm very pleased with the end result and I can swing my arms around as much as I want to while playing Beat Saber.

The only problem is I need another Rift for the office so I can get back to Assetto Corsa in VR...

24/11/2108 update - I've replaced the single stick of 8GB Crucial Ram with two 8GB sticks of Corsair Vengenace LPX (2133.) Not an essential upgrade but I'm upgrading my other PC so it made sense to take the RAM and put it to good use.
