NASCAN the 3d printed NAS

Greetings all,

First things first a shout out to the designer of this mini ITX case vfalendysh you can find his design for download on thingiverse. He did an amazing job with the design and that it can be printed on such a restricted print bed size which is amazing (designers details posted below)

Mini ITX PC Case by vfalendysh Published on July 12, 2018 www.thingiverse.com/thing:3001247

So where to begin, I set out to 3d print a mini ITX case to serve as a,

-NAS -Remote access to monitor 3d prints -HTPC -Light game emulation -An excuse to build another PC

It should look good and suit my tastes, I love copper, fabric and of course the wooden accents.

The case itself was printed with two separate filaments, Black PLA and wood PLA post processing includes sanding the wood staining, sanding rinse and repeat until you get the desired colour and tone. The body is wrapped in cloth and all seems and edges are hidden to make it as clean as possible. The two rings up top and the bottom where sprayed with copper paint.

Approximate print time is about 30 hours with 15 pieces in total with an additional 5 hours give or take of post processing the material to as it is now.

All materials came to a total cost of about =15euros Total cost of hardware =99euros (board/cpu combo and ram)

Now onto the hardware I just wanted to get something as cheap as possible and throw all my old 2.5 inch hard drives into it. I chose a fairly new board (with and older AMD Carrizo architecture) the Biostar 8800e, it has 4 cores and a low TPD it pulls about 15watts from the wall on Idle and 55watts under extreme load which it will never see in its life primarily as a NAS.

Reviews on this board commented on the high cpu temps the tiny heatsink comes with a 40mm fan, I printed an adapter and used a 60mm fan I had spare, Idle temps are around 32c and under load with stress tests it can hit the 80c mark.

It’s running of a 60watt 12volt power brick paired with a 90watt DC/DC Picopsu and running like a dream. So really happy all in all and stuck to budget.

Thanks for stopping by, feel free to ask any questions,
