So, I've been needing a Nas for all my photos, projects and such. My drives are full and I needed something quick and somewhat inexpensive.
Thing is most pre-made solutions *start* at 400$ cad for something decent. With mere 2 core processors and 1gb of ram.
So I decided to build my own ! In a older dell Optiplex 390 DT !
They're cheap, reliable and upgradable (somewhat).
Total cost was 400$ for 2x 4tb, the pc and some accessories.
You might think "But how ?" Considering the PC only has a single hard drive s
Cage, however you'd be wrong.
I replaced the DVD drive with a 5.25" to 3.5"+2.5" adapter to hold the 2 extra drives.
The one in there currently is the one in the photo, which is also hot swappable. But I will replace it with another one which can also hold 6x 2.5" drives. Which is perfect for when I switch it to ssds down the line.
(Thought I have to do a slight mod to make it fit, the screw holes are kinda wonky)
I also had to add a new network card, the old one is broken (also no, not 10gbe, I didn't have the money for it at the time unfortunately)
Software is OMV
